During the war, the shirtwaist was a way for women to meet rationing restrictions. It was also considered a good evening dress. During the 1940s, the skirt was wide enough for easy walking and could be worn for sporting events. During the 1950s, the skirt became more fitted.
During the 1940s, the style was most popular in solid colors and plaids. It also featured a fluffy petticoat. The skirt was usually loose over the hips and the blouse buttoned from the neck to the hem of the skirt.
